Preserve Your Pumkin

Vegetable oil or petroleum jelly should be rubbed onto the fresh-cut edges of a pumpkin to delay shriveling after it is carved into a Halloween jack-o’-lantern. Premature shrinkage can also be prevented by soaking the pumpkin in water. Place it in something big enough to submerge it completely, and it will absorb some of the water that’s been lost. However, it will likely crack if set to soak longer than eight hours.
